HRV (Heart Rate Variability) is the subtle variation of the time interval between heart beats.
So, if your heart rate is 60 beats per minute, it’s not actually beating once every second. For example, within that minute there may be 0.9 seconds between two beats and 1.15 seconds between two others and other differences between each of the 60 beats. In the example, the difference of 0.25 seconds between the 0.9 seconds and the 1.15 seconds is the HRV.
HRV measures the autonomic nervous system or the balance between the sympathetic and the parasympathetic systems.
So why HRV Biofeedback?
Optimal HRV
An optimal level of HRV (Heart Rate Variability) is associated with health and self-regulatory capacity, and adaptability or resilience.
How to increase HRV and improve wellbeing
During HRV biofeedback training, clients are taught how to improve their breathing using paced abdominal breathing between 4,5 – 7,5 bpm guided by a real-time display of heart rate and respiration. This is called breathing at your resonance frequency and consciously breathing just a few minutes sends signals of balance to our brain, telling us that we are ok, and brings us out from the part of the brain that makes us feel overwhelmed, into a state of calm.
